What to Expect
Full itinerary*
The itinerary may be subject to minor adjustments depending on local conditions, timing and operational requirements.

Day 1 — First Impressions of Addis

Arrival in Addis Ababa and introduction to Ethiopia’s layered history.

We visit the National Museum, walk through the vast Merkato — one of the largest open-air markets in Africa — and share our first taste of local cuisine.

Overnight in Addis Ababa.

Day 2 — Into the Danakil: Erta Ale

Early flight to Mekelle and the start of our Danakil journey.

In the afternoon, we hike toward the Erta Ale volcano and reach the crater area before nightfall. The vast volcanic landscape and the silence of the desert make for a powerful first night in one of the hottest regions on Earth.

Camping under millions of stars.

Day 3 — Desert Landscapes & Salt Flats

Morning around the crater area before continuing through the dramatic desert scenery of the Danakil Depression.

We reach Lake Afdera and camp once again in the open wilderness.

Second night under the stars.

Day 4 — Dallol & Return to Mekelle

Sunrise near the salt flats before visiting one of the most extraordinary places on Earth: the colorful geothermal formations of Dallol.

In the afternoon, we return to Mekelle for a well-earned rest.

Overnight in Mekelle.

Day 5 — Rock Churches & Highland Life

Climb to Abune Yemata, one of Ethiopia’s most dramatic rock-hewn churches, perched high above the valley.

If time allows, we explore Mekelle’s local market before flying back to Addis in the evening.

Overnight in Addis Ababa.

Day 6 — Harar: Walled City of Stories

Early flight to Dire Dawa and transfer to Harar.

First stroll inside the old walled city — narrow alleys, colorful houses, centuries of trade and tradition.

Overnight in Harar.

Day 7 — Harar & The Hyenas

Morning exploration of Harar’s markets and daily life.

In the evening, witness the famous hyena feeding ritual — a unique and unusual tradition that has become part of the city’s identity.

Overnight in Harar.

Day 8 — Return to Addis... or continue to Somaliland

Flight back to Addis Ababa for the final hours of the journey.

For those extending to Somaliland, the adventure continues toward the border — a new chapter beginning where this one ends.

End of the journey.
