What to Expect
Full itinerary*
The itinerary may be subject to minor adjustments depending on local conditions, timing and operational requirements.
Day 1 — Arrival in Ashgabat
Arrival in Ashgabat and welcome at the airport.
We begin exploring the capital — a city of white marble, monumental architecture and striking contrasts. Visits include ancient Nisa, one of the most important Parthian sites, and key landmarks that define modern Turkmenistan.
In the evening, we head out again to see the city illuminated at night — an almost surreal experience.
Overnight in Ashgabat.

Day 2 — Into the Karakum & Darwaza
Morning at leisure before we drive into the vast Karakum Desert.
Along the way, we stop at lesser-known gas craters before reaching the iconic Darwaza crater — the “Door to Hell” — burning continuously in the middle of the desert.
We camp nearby in traditional yurts and experience the desert under open skies.
Overnight in Darwaza.

Day 3 — Silk Road Legacy
Morning departure toward Kunya Urgench, one of Central Asia’s most important historical sites and a former Silk Road powerhouse.
We explore its mausoleums, towers and ruins before continuing north.
Overnight in Dashoguz.

Day 4 — Canyons of Yangykala
Flight west toward the Caspian region and drive to the dramatic Yangykala Canyon.
The multicolored cliffs rise from the desert in one of Turkmenistan’s most unexpected landscapes — remote, vast and quiet.
Overnight in Balkanabat.

Day 5 — Mountain Villages & Desert Landscapes
We travel through the Kopet Dag Mountains toward Ashgabat, stopping in Nohur village to observe local traditions.
Along the way, we visit Kow Ata underground lake and an Akhal-Teke horse farm — home to Turkmenistan’s prized national breed.
Overnight in Ashgabat.

Day 6 — Ancient Merv
Drive east toward Mary, stopping at historical sites that trace centuries of trade and empire.
We explore the vast archaeological complex of Merv, once one of the largest cities in the world and a major Silk Road center.
In the evening, we return toward Ashgabat by overnight train.
Overnight on the train.
